Tuning
Piano will be tuned to A=440 (standard concert pitch) if it is determined by the technician to be reasonably close to this standard. Pianos that have been regularly tuned and maintained should be close to this pitch. ("A=440" means the strings on the note "A" above middle "C" vibrate at 440 times per second.) Otherwise, our standard practice is to tune each individual piano "to itself" to avoid possible string breakage and/or damage to the cast iron plate. The reason for this is that unlike other technicians, we do not perform what are commonly referred to as "pitch raises." This is a method of raising the pitch on a piano which has not been regularly maintained in order to get it to standard pitch in a short amount of time. The inherent risk in doing this (especially with older pianos) is the aforementioned string breakage or plate damage.
For new pianos we recommend tuning four times in the first year and three times the second year. From then on, tuning a piano twice per year should be sufficient for normal home usage. This is necessary to maintain the piano at A=440 pitch as well as the nearly 20-ton load bearing on the plate. For clubs, institutions, universities, etc., tunings are usually done on a more frequent basis.
Price: $135.00
