Horizontal Pianos
The term "horizontal" is used for this category of piano because its string design is parallel to the floor. In common terms, these are known as "grand pianos." The size range of grand pianos is generally between 5ft. and 9ft. (see below.) They tend to be more responsive and powerful than vertical pianos for a variety of reasons, including increased soundboard area, superior action and scale design, and increased string length. Generally speaking, larger sized pianos produce better tone quality. If you're looking for quality of performance, there is no better investment than a top-of-the-line grand. However, it's usually better to opt for a quality vertical than a mediocre grand. Some examples of grand piano models are shown below.

Baby Grand: The photo shown to the left represents a typical baby grand. This one measures 5ft. 1in. in length. Grand: This photo depicts a common model of grand piano. The length of this particular instrument is 5ft. 10in. but the size range of what is commonly referred to as a "grand" piano may vary from approximately 5ft. 6in. to 7ft. Concert Grand: The Crown Jewel of the piano world. This supremely crafted instrument of expression is generally over 7 ft. in length with a typical length 9 ft. as seen in the photo at left.
